During the month of June was officially inaugurated the launch of the Internship Program 2024 of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Santiago de Chile, where part of MIGA's research focused on the production of hydrogen from the electrolysis of ammonia is carried out.
This instance of collaboration was organized by the university's outreach unit, which will allow students enrolled in the Alexander Fleming School, located in the district of Las Condes, to carry out a six-week internship, where they can learn about science-related work and research in the university environment.
The laboratories participating in this activity are: Kinetics and Photochemistry; Organic Synthesis; Green Chemistry; Marine Biotechnology; Molecular Virology and Pathogen ControNH3Eventl; Soil Physicochemistry; Conductive Polymers and Applied Electrochemistry.
The internships began on May 29 and will end on July 3. Herna Barrientos, MIGA researcher, and who is in charge of three of the 22 interns, says that "on the first day I gave them a safety talk and they saw the equipment in the laboratory. After that, we prepared solutions and observed crystals under the microscope. Later on, we will perform thin layer chromatography and electrocatalytic techniques," she says.
Finally, the researcher emphasizes that the motivation to participate in these instances. "We want to open the doors of the faculty and the laboratories to high school students. Our idea is to show laboratory techniques and what is done here. We want this to have an impact on those who want to study a career related to science", says Herna Barrientos.
